Ancient Nemea's real claim to fame has nothing to do with wine: it was the site of the Nemean Games, one of the four Panhellenic Games of ancient Greece alongside the Olympic, Pythian, and Isthmian Games, held every two years in honor of Zeus and attested from at least 573 BCE. Mythology tied the games to Heracles' first labor, the slaying of the Nemean Lion, and the real archaeological site today includes a partially restored Temple of Zeus and a genuine ancient stadium, complete with a vaulted stone entrance tunnel where ancient athletes once scratched their own graffiti into the walls — some of it still visible.
The modern Nemea wine region takes its name from the same valley and is one of Greece's oldest officially recognized wine appellations, established as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in 1971. The PDO zone is built entirely around Agiorgitiko, or "St. George's grape," Greece's most widely planted red grape variety and one indigenous to this exact area — the PDO rules require wines carrying the Nemea name to be made from 100% Agiorgitiko, grown across roughly 3,000 hectares spread over 17 villages. Wine writers often describe Agiorgitiko's soft tannins and approachability by comparing it informally to Pinot Noir, though that's a loose shorthand rather than any official classification — the grape, and the wines made from it, have their own distinct character shaped by this specific corner of the Peloponnese.
Visiting the region today means real tasting at a real, working Nemea winery, set among vineyards that have produced wine in this exact valley since antiquity — ancient writers even recorded a wine from this general area known as "Phliasios Oenos," though that's a separate historical note rather than a direct ancestor of any specific bottle poured today.
