Meteora's dramatic rock pillars are entirely natural, not carved or built — UNESCO's own listing credits them to coastal erosion by a prehistoric sea that covered the plain of Thessaly roughly 30 million years ago, with wind, rain, and tectonic activity gradually shaping the exposed sandstone and conglomerate into the freestanding towers seen today, some rising more than 400 meters above the valley floor. That natural origin is actually part of why Meteora holds a genuinely rare UNESCO World Heritage status: it's listed under both cultural and natural criteria, one of very few sites in the world recognized for its human history and its underlying geology at the same time.
The human history layered on top of that geology spans roughly 1200 to 1600 CE, according to UNESCO's own inscription, with monks drawn to these isolated, nearly inaccessible summits as places of retreat and prayer — at the height of this monastic settlement, as many as 24 monasteries stood atop the rocks. Only six remain active and open to visitors today: Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Holy Trinity (Agia Triada), Rousanou, St. Stephen, and St. Nicholas Anapausas, each with its own layout, frescoes, and history, including wall paintings at one monastery dating to 1527 by the painter Theophanes the Cretan that UNESCO itself describes as a foundational reference point for later Byzantine religious art.
A genuinely unhurried, overnight 2-day format gives real breathing room for visiting several of these six monasteries rather than rushing between one or two — worth knowing ahead of time, each keeps its own set visiting hours and closes to the public on a different weekday, and all of them enforce a modest dress code, with shoulders and knees expected to be covered (a wrap skirt is typically available at the entrance for anyone who needs one).
