Hydra's famous ban on wheels is a genuine, specific rule, not just a marketing phrase: since the 1950s, a government decree has prohibited private cars and motorbikes anywhere on the island, specifically to preserve its traditional stone architecture and quiet character. More than seventy years later, the rule still holds — the only motorized vehicles allowed are garbage trucks, emergency vehicles, and a handful of small utility carts used by shops and for construction. Everyone and everything else moves by foot, water taxi, or the island's working mules and donkeys, which still carry luggage, goods, and even building materials up Hydra's steep, narrow lanes.
That quiet is a relatively recent development. In the 18th and early 19th centuries Hydra built one of the largest merchant and privateering fleets in the Aegean, and the fortunes made at sea funded the grand stone mansions that still rise in tiers above the harbor — several belonging to shipowning families who went on to arm vessels and supply naval leadership during the Greek War of Independence. That maritime wealth, concentrated on an island with little farmland of its own, is a large part of why Hydra's architecture looks so different from a typical small Greek fishing village.
In the mid-20th century Hydra's combination of dramatic light, car-free streets, and cheap waterfront property drew a wave of artists and writers, Leonard Cohen among the best-known, and the island has kept a genuine gallery-and-studio culture ever since alongside its fishing-village roots — a real layer of modern history on top of its 19th-century maritime wealth.
