Much of central Athens' historic core, including the roughly one-mile stretch of Dionysiou Areopagitou and Apostolou Pavlou streets that wraps around the south and west sides of the Acropolis, was deliberately pedestrianized in the lead-up to the 2004 Olympic Games, part of a city-wide plan — begun in 1995 — to link the city's scattered archaeological sites into one continuous walking and cycling corridor rather than leave them isolated behind traffic. An e-bike route through Athens today rides largely along the legacy of that project.
The real advantage of an e-bike over walking is range: electric assist lets a guided route cover considerably more ground in the same few hours, moving between the dense, pedestrian-only historic lanes around the Acropolis and the wider, car-friendly boulevards and residential neighborhoods further out, without the group needing to be strong cyclists or absorb the fatigue of a long walking tour in Athens' heat.
