The genuine highlight of this day trip is the Temple of Aphaea, built around 500 BC on a pine-covered hill on Aegina's northeastern coast and counted among the best-preserved ancient Greek temples still standing — rivaled in Greece mainly by the Hephaisteion in central Athens. Built in the Doric order and dedicated to Aphaia, a local goddess later associated with Athena, the temple predates the Parthenon by several decades. Its hilltop position has also fed a well-known Greek tourism claim: that the Temple of Aphaea, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion form a 'sacred triangle,' their locations roughly aligned when plotted on a map. All three temples were indeed built within a few decades of each other, which keeps the theory alive, but no scholarly consensus confirms the alignment was a deliberate ancient design rather than coincidence — it's presented here as a genuine, long-running debate, not a settled fact.
Beyond the temple, Aegina is genuinely known across Greece for its pistachios. The trees were introduced to the island in the second half of the 19th century and found ideal conditions in Aegina's volcanic soil and dry, sea-moderated climate, producing a smaller, more intensely flavored nut with a distinctive reddish skin. The Aegina pistachio (fistiki Aiginis) holds EU Protected Designation of Origin status, meaning only pistachios actually grown in Aegina's registered cultivation area can legally carry the name — a real, enforced distinction, not just a marketing label.
Aegina's own harbor town, the island's capital, sits a short walk or taxi ride from the temple and adds a working Greek-island waterfront to the day — fishing boats, pistachio vendors, and a compact grid of streets that long predates the island's later role as an Athens day-trip destination.
