This tour is a tour of Polk and Henderson County wine country, and its pull is that the region was growing grapes long before Biltmore's wine program. Polk County had a thriving grape-growing tradition in the late 1800s, and local "Tryon grapes" reportedly appeared on the menu of New York's Waldorf Astoria in the early 1900s. Today's vintners are rebuilding that legacy at altitude, in a cool Blue Ridge climate that suits European varieties.
Overmountain Vineyards takes its name from the Overmountain Men, the Revolutionary War militia who gathered to fight at Kings Mountain in 1780. It is a family farm that sold grapes to larger producers for roughly a decade before opening its own tasting room in 2010, and it focuses on Petit Manseng, an aromatic white grape from southwest France, alongside Bordeaux reds.
Parker-Binns Vineyard in Mill Spring began in 2007, when a couple who had spent years in food service and then tree farming bought ten acres and planted vines after learning that Biltmore bought grapes from local growers. Marked Tree Vineyard in Flat Rock is much newer: the land was bought in 2015, vines went in during 2016, and the tasting room opened in 2020. Its name nods to trees marked by Native Americans as wilderness guideposts. Together, the three show how young and fast-moving this wine region still is.
