A private day trip stringing together real waterfalls, quirky museums, and mountain towns.
A private, personally guided day trip through Western North Carolina's highlands, taking in real waterfalls, small mountain towns, and unexpected stops like a museum dedicated to house cats.
Run by Magnolia Heritage Tours, this private day trip is curated to show a variety of Western North Carolina in a single day — from the quirky American Museum of the House Cat and the historic Jackson County Courthouse to a run of real named waterfalls: Cullasaja Falls, Dry Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Whitewater Falls, Looking Glass Falls, and Sliding Rock, plus stops at Cliffside Lake Recreation Area and the Mount Pisgah Overlook. This is a private tour for your group only, with your own personal guide. In winter, some roads may be closed and your guide will substitute alternate real sites.

Start with the oddest stop. The American Museum of the House Cat in Sylva opened in 2017 and was founded by Dr. Harold Sims, known locally as the Cat Man for rescuing abandoned felines; it is believed to hold one of the largest collections of house cat memorabilia in the country. Just up the road, the Jackson County Courthouse, finished in 1914 with 107 steps up from Main Street, served as the county's courthouse until 1994 and became the public library in 2009.
The waterfalls then take over. Whitewater Falls, on the North Carolina-South Carolina line, is promoted as having a 411-foot plunge and as the highest waterfall in the eastern United States, but that figure is probably exaggerated and the true height is likely nearer 350 to 400 feet. Sliding Rock, a roughly 60-foot natural water slide into a plunge pool on Looking Glass Creek, is a classic summer stop.
Cliffside Lake Recreation Area, near Highlands, and the Mount Pisgah Overlook (the mountain stands at 5,721 feet) round out a day that sees both high and low parts of Western North Carolina.
