Pack Square, the heart of this walk, is named for George Willis Pack, a lumber merchant who gave Asheville land for the courthouse and surrounding square as well as a free kindergarten and parks. The Asheville Art Museum on the square, incorporated in 1948 as the third-oldest art museum in North Carolina, reopened on November 14, 2019 after a three-year, $24 million expansion that preserved its 1926 Pack Library building as a north wing.
A short stroll away, the South Slope district shows the other side of modern Asheville. Highland Brewing opened in 1994 as the city's first craft brewery, and many others followed. South Slope, once an area of car dealerships, now holds around nine breweries, which helped Asheville tie for the first-ever Beer City USA poll in 2009.
Putting the museum and the breweries on one walk captures how Asheville reinvented itself: from a Gilded Age health resort to an arts-and-craft-beer town.
