The River Arts District's present life as a creative neighborhood follows several earlier lives. Factories began appearing along the French Broad River after the railroad arrived in the 1880s, and the corridor remained one of Asheville's main industrial areas for decades. A massive flood in 1916 swept away much of the riverside community, and many business owners abandoned the area and moved to higher ground.
The neighborhood's comeback is tied to the 1989 Asheville Riverfront Plan and RiverLink's work on the riverfront. Artists took over the vacant warehouses over the following years, and the district now holds hundreds of studios.
The river itself shaped both the district and the writer who documented it. Wilma Dykeman's 1955 book The French Broad helped spark public concern about pollution, and in 2021 the city named the Wilma Dykeman Greenway, a 17-mile park along the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers.
