Pisgah National Forest was one of the first national forests in the eastern United States, established in 1916. Roughly 86,700 acres of the original forest came from the Biltmore Estate, which Edith Vanderbilt sold to the federal government in 1914. The forest takes its name from Mount Pisgah, named for the biblical mountain from which Moses saw the Promised Land.
The forest is also where American forestry education began: the Biltmore Forest School, the country's first school of forestry, operated at the direction of George Vanderbilt, and its site is now the Cradle of Forestry. Because the guide chooses the route on the day, your hike may cross waterfalls and overlooks, but the conversation can always draw on that history of a forest that was once largely logged and replanted.
The forest's nearby waterfalls include Looking Glass Falls, a roughly 60-foot cascade visible from US 276.
