Combining the forest with the Blue Ridge Parkway lets a full day span two very different elevations. The Parkway reaches its highest point, 6,053 feet, as it passes over the southwestern slope of Richland Balsam, a peak that tops out at about 6,410 feet in the Great Balsam Mountains. At that height, spruce-fir forest replaces the hardwoods below.
Closer to Asheville, Mount Pisgah rises to 5,721 feet along the Parkway near Pisgah Inn. The mountain gave Pisgah National Forest its name and was once the site of Buck Spring Lodge, a hunting outpost of the Biltmore Estate; reaching its summit is a 1.6-mile hike with a climb of about 712 feet. Your guide picks the route that fits the distance you want, so check which stops your group prefers.
Whichever trail you choose, the combination of forest, Parkway overlooks and a picnic lunch is a good way to see why this part of the Appalachians is called the Blue Ridge.
