Downtown Asheville's built landmarks come from the early twentieth-century boom. The Basilica of Saint Lawrence was designed by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino, who came to the area to work on Biltmore. Construction ran from 1905 to 1909, finished by his son after Guastavino died in 1908, and its elliptical dome spans 58 by 82 feet, one of the largest freestanding elliptical domes in the country.
Grove Arcade was conceived by E.W. Grove in the early 1920s as an elegant shopping center. Grove died in 1927 and the building opened in 1929. The Flatiron Building was announced in 1925, took its first tenants in January 1926, and was designed by New York architect Albert Wirth; it is considered North Carolina's best surviving wedge-shaped building.
Asheville voted itself dry in 1907, and Prohibition made bootlegging a cottage industry in the mountains, which is the context for the Pack's Tavern tunnel visit. Mast General Store, whose original location opened in Valle Crucis in 1883, opened its Asheville store in 1999.
