This tour heads into the High Country, where vineyards sit far higher than most wine regions. Grandfather Vineyard & Winery in Banner Elk is at roughly 3,300 feet, on the Watauga River in the shadow of Grandfather Mountain, and Linville Falls Winery, a family-run 40-acre vineyard near the Parkway, sits at about 3,200 feet. At those elevations, cool nights and short seasons shape the flavors in the glass.

Grandfather Mountain itself is a United Nations Biosphere Reserve. Its famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, built in 1952 by Hugh Morton, spans 228 feet between two rocky peaks and sways in high wind, which is how it earned its name.

Little Switzerland, the village the tour is built around for the shopping and dining stop, began as a resort in 1909-1910, when North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Heriot Clarkson saw the resemblance to Switzerland and formed a company to build Swiss-style cottages and an inn that opened by the 1911 summer season. When the Blue Ridge Parkway was routed through the community in the 1960s, the company took the government to court over the right-of-way.
