The towns this tour tends to explore each have a distinct personality. Brevard sits at the gateway to Pisgah National Forest, and Transylvania County is known as the Land of Waterfalls, with roughly 250 falls. The town is also famous for its white squirrels; the local story is that a traveling carnival truck overturned in 1949 and some white squirrels escaped, and in 1986 the town council made Brevard a squirrel sanctuary. Treat the carnival origin as local legend rather than settled history.
Pisgah National Forest itself was established in 1916 and includes about 86,700 acres that were sold to the federal government in 1914 by Edith Vanderbilt from the Biltmore Estate. The Pisgah Forest area is where the Cradle of Forestry, the first school of forestry in the United States, was founded under George Vanderbilt.
Hendersonville, a short drive south, is the heart of North Carolina apple country. Henderson County is commonly credited with around 80 percent of the state's apple crop, so a farm stand or cider stop is a natural add-on in late summer and fall. Because you shape the day, you can mix forest, town and orchard however you like.
