The tour starts with some of the most dramatic stops on the Parkway south of Asheville. Graveyard Fields gets its name either from a great windstorm that felled spruce and fir trees, leaving moss-covered stumps like graves, or from early-1900s logging that left stumps behind; sources differ. Looking Glass Rock, a granite dome that stands about 3,969 feet, is named for the way its wet face reflects sunlight.
Devil's Courthouse (5,720 feet) is named from late-1800s travel writing about the devil holding court in a cave in the cliff, but the site is also part of the Cherokee story of Judaculla, the slant-eyed giant who owns the game and judges how animals are treated. Richland Balsam, over whose slope the Parkway reaches its highest point at 6,053 feet, comes next.
The tour then descends toward Cherokee, home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians on the Qualla Boundary. Mingo Falls, about 120 feet tall, lies on the Qualla Boundary and its name comes from a Cherokee word often translated as Big Bear. The Museum of the Cherokee People, founded in 1948, tells the story of the Cherokee who remained in their homeland after the 1838 removal.
