Black Mountain, where this tour ends the day, was originally a tiny farming village called Grey Eagle. The arrival of the railroad in 1879 changed everything: visitors escaping lowland heat came for the mountain air, inns and boarding houses followed, and religious retreat centers such as Montreat and the Blue Ridge Assembly grew up nearby. A disastrous fire in 1912 burned many of the wooden downtown buildings, which is why the brick storefronts you stroll past today look the way they do.
The town is also known for Black Mountain College, an experimental arts school that operated in the Swannanoa Valley from 1933 to 1957, and its creative legacy still shows in the galleries and craft shops along the main streets.
The two wineries are a different style from big-name estates. Perry's Berry's is a family blueberry farm that makes fruit wines from blueberries, plums, pears, peaches and scuppernong grapes, while Silver Fork grows classic European vinifera grapes such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with views of the South Mountains. The contrast between fruit wine and grape wine is part of the fun of the day.
