Colca Canyon is often described as one of the deepest in the world; figures vary by source and by where it is measured, with the deepest sections reported at over 3,000 metres below the rim. The valley's villages, strung between Chivay and Cabanaconde over roughly 56 kilometres, are still inhabited by people of the Collagua and Cabana cultures.
Many of the terraces on the canyon walls were built long before the Inca. Sources attribute them to the Collagua and Cabana peoples and describe them as among the oldest continuously farmed terraces in the Americas. Seeing them from the road is the best way to grasp how people turned steep slopes into farmland.
Cruz del Cóndor is a rim viewpoint between Chivay and Cabanaconde, and the best chance to see Andean condors is in the morning, when warming air currents lift them out of the canyon. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, which is why a private day with flexible timing is useful; your guide can allow more time at the viewpoint if the birds are late.
