El Misti's summit stands at 5,822 metres, and the volcano is classed as dormant. Its last recorded eruption was in 1985, which came 198 years after the previous documented one. It is non-technical, with no ropes or ice skills required on the standard routes, but sources describe it as strenuous because of steep, loose sand and ash slopes.
Two main routes are described. The Pastores route starts around 3,300 metres, with camp often at about 4,500 metres, while the Aguada Blanca route starts around 3,700 metres, with camp near 4,800 metres. The summit push is typically five to six hours from camp, and it is usually done as a two-day trip.
Altitude is the real challenge. Sources note that many who attempt the climb do not reach the summit, mainly because of acclimatization problems, so spending time at altitude beforehand helps. Weather, conditions and your own health decide how far you go on the day.
