Laguna de Salinas lies inside the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, created on 9 August 1979 to protect the vicuña's habitat. At around 4,300 metres, the lagoon is a mix of open water, salt flats and volcano backdrops, and the scenery changes with the season: more water and flamingos in the rainy months, a bright white salt crust in the dry ones.
For photographers, the flamingo count matters less than the light and patience. Sources report that three flamingo species can be seen here, including Andean and Chilean flamingos, and a private vehicle lets you stop when birds are close instead of keeping to a group timetable.
Altitude is the main practical issue. The drive climbs steadily, and many visitors feel it, so slowing down and staying hydrated matters. Wildlife on the way, including vicuñas, is part of the experience, though sightings are never guaranteed.
