Juanita was found in 1995 on Mount Ampato by anthropologist Johan Reinhard and mountaineer Miguel Zárate, after melting ice exposed her burial bundle. She was a girl of roughly 12 to 15 who was sacrificed in the capacocha ritual, dated to about 1440-1480. Her body was preserved by freezing temperatures at high altitude.
She has been shown at the Museo Santuarios Andinos in Arequipa since 1996, with periods in storage for conservation, so it is worth checking what is on display on your day. The topic involves a child's death and is handled in the museum with explanation of Inca religion and high-altitude ritual; the visit is serious, not sensational.
After the museum, the tour adds Santa Catalina Monastery, consecrated in 1579 and open to the public from 1970, and the districts of Cayma, Yanahuara and Sabandía. Yanahuara's mirador, framed by sillar arches, is one of the best views toward the volcanoes.
