Trekking in the canyon is a different experience from viewing it. The route typically starts from Cabanaconde, at around 3,400 metres, and descends toward the canyon floor, where the Sangalle oasis has swimming pools fed by natural springs. What goes down must climb back up, so the return is the demanding part; a private pace helps.
The terraces on the canyon walls are a reminder that people have lived here for a long time. Sources say the Collagua and Cabana peoples built them over 1,400 years ago, and that many predate the Inca. Walking beside them shows how water channels and stone walls are still maintained.
Condor viewing is part of the trip. Morning is the best time, when warm air builds up and the birds rise on thermals. Hot springs in the Colca Valley, such as those near Chivay, are a common reward after a hike, though which springs you reach depends on the route used.
