Arequipa was founded on 15 August 1540 by Garcí Manuel de Carbajal, acting for Francisco Pizarro, and received its city title from Charles V in 1541. Starting a tour straight from the airport puts that history in context early: the city sits in a valley under three volcanoes, and the first long view of them tells you why the Spanish chose this spot.
Santa Catalina Monastery was consecrated in 1579 and opened to the public only in 1970, after about four centuries as a working convent. It covers over 20,000 square metres, which is why it is often called a city within a city, with narrow streets, plazas and colourful courtyards between the nuns' living quarters.
Yanahuara is one of the oldest districts of the area. Its mirador is framed by arches of sillar, the local volcanic stone, with verses from local poets engraved on them, and it looks across the white city to the volcanoes. Carmen Alto gives a quieter angle over the Chili River valley and its farm terraces.
