Delicate Arch is the real centerpiece of this four-hour private outing, and it earns that status honestly: the free-standing span stands 52 feet tall, with an opening 46 feet high and 32 feet wide, making it the largest free-standing arch anywhere in the park. It wasn't always called "Delicate" either — early visitors knew it as the "Salt Wash Arch" or, less flatteringly, "Cowboy's Chaps," until a 1934 scientific survey report described it as "the most delicately chiseled arch in the entire area" and the name stuck. Today it's the single most recognized geologic feature in Utah, appearing on the state's license plates and on a 1996 postage stamp marking Utah's statehood centennial.
Double Arch, also on this tour's real itinerary, formed through an entirely different process than Delicate Arch. Rather than wind and rain slowly wearing away the side of a sandstone fin, Double Arch is a true pothole arch: rainwater pooled on top of a rock ledge, slowly deepened a depression, and eventually broke through to an alcove forming beneath it from the cliff face. The larger of its two openings spans 148 feet with a 104-foot-tall ceiling — the tallest opening and second-longest span of any arch in the park — and the formation briefly appears in the opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (though the cave shown alongside it in the film doesn't actually exist here).
Rounding out the real stops, the Devils Garden Trailhead sits at the park's far northern end, roughly 18 miles from the entrance, and serves as the gateway to the park's most extensive network of arches and fins — even a short visit to the trailhead area gives a sense of the terrain before the trail fans out toward Landscape Arch and beyond. Park Avenue Trail, by contrast, is a gentler one-mile walk along a dry wash hemmed in by towering sandstone fins and monoliths, including the aptly named Courthouse Towers — the Three Gossips, the Tower of Babel, and Sheep Rock among them — some rising more than 600 feet overhead. Covering landmarks this different in character, from a pothole arch to a slot-canyon-like promenade, in a single private half-day is exactly the kind of ground a dedicated guide and vehicle make realistic.
