Baking a pizza on a volcano isn't a gimmick invented for tourists — it's a real, documented practice that's grown up around a genuine geological feature on Pacaya's slopes. In spots where old lava flows have cooled and hardened, fumaroles — natural vents where residual heat, steam, and gases still escape from underground — continue to warm the surrounding rock. Local guides have built small ovens directly into that hardened volcanic rock near these vents, using the natural heat along with hot coals to actually bake a real pizza, crust and all, right there on the mountain. The same fumaroles are used for the simpler version of the trick: skewering marshmallows and holding them directly over a vent until they roast.
Pacaya itself has one of the more active eruption records of any Central American volcano, having erupted roughly 55 times since 1900, though it typically sits at a quieter, degassing state rather than active lava flow on any given day — which is exactly what makes those fumaroles consistently warm enough to cook with in the first place. The hike up crosses genuine hardened lava fields before reaching the area where the ovens are set up, so the pizza stop isn't a separate, staged add-on; it's built directly into the same volcanic landscape the hike already passes through.
At roughly 2,552 meters, Pacaya is a comparatively approachable climb among Guatemala's volcanoes, which is part of why this kind of hands-on, food-based activity works here in a way it wouldn't on a taller, more technical peak like Acatenango. Going private rather than joining one of the larger shared tours also means the oven and the pace of the hike are set around your own group, not a bus-load of other visitors waiting their turn at the same fumarole.
