Altamira is a genuinely local project before it's a tourist attraction: the park sits on a hillside above the Panchoy Valley and is built almost entirely from recycled materials, reshaped by village artisans into oversized sculptures — giant hands, birds, and other figures — rather than imported decorative pieces. Beyond the photo-friendly sculptures, the real draw is the hilltop setting itself: trails and viewpoints that look straight down over Antigua's colonial grid and out toward the volcanoes ringing the valley, the same Agua, Acatenango, and Fuego that shape so much of this region's land and economy. The park has also become a direct source of employment for the surrounding community, so a visit functions as both a scenic stop and a small, real contribution to the village that built and maintains it.
Hobbitenango began in 2015 as something much smaller than what exists today: two young Guatemalan friends with a shared interest in fantasy fiction and eco-friendly building set out, almost as a personal project, to build a handful of hobbit-style structures on a steep mountainside in Vuelta Grande, inspired directly by the Hobbiton movie set built for Peter Jackson's films in New Zealand. What started as an informal retreat to disconnect from city life has grown into a genuinely large operation — more than two dozen distinct areas today, including restaurants, gardens, fairground-style rides, and even a three-room micro-hotel for overnight stays — built using local labor and largely sustainable materials rather than a corporate theme-park model.
What ties the two stops together is the elevation: both parks were built specifically for their hilltop position above the Antigua valley, and on a clear day the panoramic views at Hobbitenango — looking out over much of the same volcanic landscape Altamira overlooks from the opposite side of the valley — are as much the draw as the hobbit-style architecture itself. Together they make for a day built around two sites, Guatemalan in origin and ownership, that happened to find an audience far beyond the villages that built them.
