Zaanse Schans isn't an untouched village that happens to have old windmills standing in it — it's a deliberately assembled open-air museum. Between 1961 and 1974, historic windmills and buildings from across the wider Zaanstreek region were physically relocated here on trucks and barges specifically to preserve them in one place, after centuries in which the Zaan river once powered several hundred working windmills at its peak. Eight of the surviving mills were moved this way, restored to full working order, and most still produce real goods today — oil, dye, mustard, or sawn timber — using the same techniques as their original 18th- and 19th-century operators.
Volendam, the second stop, has a genuinely different history: founded in 1357 when nearby Edam dug a canal to a new harbor on the Zuiderzee, it grew into a serious herring and eel fishing port, then became an art-colony favorite between 1880 and 1910 when painters flocked there to capture locals in the village's distinctive pointed-bonnet traditional dress. The 1932 completion of the Afsluitdijk dam turned the Zuiderzee into the freshwater IJsselmeer almost overnight, permanently changing what the village's fishing fleet could actually catch.
Pairing a relocated windmill museum with a real, working former fishing-harbor town in one day gives a reasonably complete picture of two very different, equally real, pieces of North Holland's rural history.
