About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real stops at genuine Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam, and Marken. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include genuine Zaanse Schans windmills, Edam's real cheese town, Volendam's fishing village, and the island of Marken.

Edam cheese takes its name directly from this town, which has been producing dairy since the Middle Ages and grew wealthy enough from the trade that Emperor Charles V granted it a formal weekly cheese-market charter in 1526, a right later made permanent in 1594. That market ran continuously for roughly 250 years before closing in 1922, and the version visitors see walking through Edam today, with real cheese wheels stacked and weighed in the main square, was deliberately revived in 1989.

Marken, the fourth stop, was a genuine island until 1957 — separated from the mainland since the 13th century after a flood cut it off, the islanders built their wooden houses on raised mounds to survive the Zuiderzee's regular high tides, and fished for eel as their main livelihood. A causeway finally connected Marken to the mainland in 1957, but the village itself, with its characteristic pile-built houses, still looks much like it did when reaching it meant taking a boat.

Covering Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken across one full 6-7 hour day means seeing a working windmill museum, a genuine centuries-old cheese-trading town, a historic fishing port, and a former island in a single private outing — four real places with four genuinely different histories, not four versions of the same postcard view.
