The Van Gogh Museum opened on June 2, 1973, in a building designed by Gerrit Rietveld, with a later exhibition wing added by architect Kisho Kurokawa. It's a genuinely purpose-built home for one artist's work, and it holds the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings anywhere in the world.
That collection exists because of real family history, not a museum simply buying up his work. Vincent Willem van Gogh - the painter's own nephew and namesake - inherited much of what his uncle and his father Theo had kept. In 1962, with support from the Dutch government, he donated that collection to the newly formed Vincent van Gogh Foundation, and it's that donation that became the museum's real founding core.
Given how heavily booked this specific museum gets - it's consistently one of the hardest tickets in Amsterdam - the real reserved entry on this tour matters in a very practical way, putting you in front of the genuine paintings and letters rather than in a queue.
