Van Gogh's actual painting career was remarkably short and started later than many visitors expect. He didn't take up painting seriously until 1881, while living back with his parents, after working through several other professions first. That year he moved to The Hague to study under Anton Mauve, a relative by marriage and a leading figure of the Hague School, who taught him watercolor and oil technique.

Between 1883 and 1885 he lived in Nuenen, a village in Brabant, painting farmers, weavers, and rural laborers from real life. That period produced The Potato Eaters in 1885 - his first true masterpiece, and a genuinely Dutch-period work, painted years before the brighter, more famous style most people associate with him today.

That style only emerged after he moved to Paris in 1886, where contact with the avant-garde - including Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin - reshaped his brushwork and use of color. Throughout all of it, his brother Theo supported him financially, and their long correspondence is part of how so much of his real thinking survives today. A trained art historian guiding you through the actual collection can trace that whole real arc - Dutch beginnings, Nuenen's darker palette, Paris's transformation - rather than presenting the paintings in isolation.
