Amsterdam's own name comes directly from the river this cruise reaches: "Amstelredamme," a dam built across the Amstel river, first appears in a surviving document from 1275, when Count Floris V granted the small settlement an exemption from a bridge toll. Over the following decades the name shortened through "Aemsterdam" into the Amsterdam of today — meaning the Amstel isn't just a river that happens to run through the city, it's the literal reason Amsterdam exists and is named what it is.
The planned 17th-century canal ring that most tourist cruises stick to is a deliberate, man-made extension built outward from the historic center; the Amstel itself is the older, natural waterway the city originally grew up alongside, long before Herengracht or Keizersgracht were ever dug. Reaching it on a small traditional boat gives a sense of Amsterdam's real geography that a cruise confined entirely to the canal ring doesn't.
Because the boat is small and the group private, the route isn't locked to the standard tourist loop — there's room to genuinely slow down once you're past the busier central canals and out onto the open water of the Amstel itself.
