Look closely at the canal houses as you glide past and you'll notice how narrow most of them are relative to how deep they run — a quirk with a very practical origin. During the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam taxed property owners based on the width of a house's canal-facing facade rather than its total floor area, so merchants built narrow but surprisingly deep homes to minimize what they owed. The same houses' famous hook-and-pulley beams, still visible jutting out near the roofline of many gables, were used to haul furniture in through the windows, since the resulting staircases inside were usually too steep and narrow to use for anything bulky.
At golden hour, when the low sun catches the brickwork and windows of those same centuries-old houses start lighting up one by one, the effect those tax-dodging Golden Age architects unintentionally created is arguably at its most striking — which is exactly the window of time this cruise is timed around.
On a small electric boat built for two, there's no engine noise competing with the quiet of the canals — just an unhurried, private pass through some of the most photographed stretches of the UNESCO-listed Grachtengordel, with the included bubbly and snacks for company.
