About This Tour

Real stops include skip-the-line Rijksmuseum entry, the genuine Rembrandt House Museum, and Amsterdam city highlights.

The Rembrandt House Museum is Rembrandt's own real former home, not a recreation built elsewhere. He bought the house on Jodenbreestraat on January 5, 1639, for 13,000 guilders, and lived and worked there until 1656, when his bankruptcy forced an inventory and, in 1658, an auction that sold the property for 11,000 guilders. For nearly two decades, this was genuinely where he painted, ran his art-dealing business, and taught students.

His actual studio - the kunstkaemer - is where that teaching and much of his own work happened, and it's been reconstructed based on the detailed inventory drawn up during his 1656 bankruptcy. The Rembrandt House Foundation opened the restored building as a museum in 1911, and today it holds a genuinely near-complete set of his etchings, with live etching demonstrations still given in the real studio space.

That's a different kind of connection than seeing his finished paintings at the Rijksmuseum: this tour's skip-the-line Rijksmuseum entry lets you stand in front of his actual masterpieces, while the Rembrandt House lets you stand in the real rooms where he made them - two genuinely different ways of encountering the same artist, combined with Amsterdam's own city highlights in one day.
