The Rijksmuseum itself has a real, layered history before a single painting is even considered. It was founded in The Hague in 1798, moved to Amsterdam in 1808, and spent decades housed first in the Royal Palace and later in the Trippenhuis before its own purpose-built home - the building you'll actually walk through - opened in 1885. That building, designed by architect Pierre Cuypers after he won a design competition in 1876, blends Gothic and Renaissance Revival elements loaded with national symbolism. A decade-long, 375-million-euro renovation reopened it in 2013.
The real centerpiece inside is Rembrandt's The Night Watch, painted in 1642 and genuinely massive - roughly 12 by 14 feet. It depicts a civic guard company led by Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, and what made it radical for its time is the sense of motion Rembrandt built into a format that was usually static: figures caught mid-stride and mid-gesture, lit with the dramatic light-and-shadow technique now known as chiaroscuro, turning a standard group portrait into an actual scene.
Alongside it hangs Vermeer's The Milkmaid, a quiet domestic scene of a servant pouring milk that's become one of the most recognizable works in Dutch art - and it's one of four genuine Vermeer paintings the Rijksmuseum holds, including View of Houses in Delft. With real reserved entry, you walk straight to these works rather than queuing at one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands.
