Amsterdam is home to roughly 2,500 licensed houseboats today, a number the city has deliberately capped — but the tradition itself traces back to the aftermath of the Second World War, when a severe housing shortage combined with a surplus of decommissioned vessels made living on the water a genuinely practical solution rather than a lifestyle choice. What began as wartime necessity became so popular that by the 1960s and 70s the city council had to start restricting new moorings just to keep the canals navigable.
As you sit down to a two-course dinner on this cruise, many of the moored boats you pass along the route are real, lived-in homes rather than tourist curiosities, each one adapted over decades to fit a genuinely narrow canal-side mooring.
