Zaanse Schans isn't one generic windmill — each of the mills still standing there had, and in several cases still has, a specific real job. De Kat is a working paint and dye mill dating from the 17th century; De Huisman, in operation since 1786, is a spice mill. Both are among the handful of windmills relocated here between 1961 and 1974 from elsewhere along the river Zaan, restored to grind and process the same way they once did when roughly 600 windmills lined the river and made the region one of the earliest industrialized areas in the world.
The included Dutch lunch draws on a real, centuries-old local habit rather than a themed meal built for tourists. Since the 17th century, a cold midday meal of bread, cheese, and cold cuts — sometimes called a "koffietafel" when coffee is part of it — has been the standard lunch across much of the Netherlands, a straightforward, practical pattern that has barely changed.
Combining Keukenhof's seasonal tulip displays with Zaanse Schans's working windmills in one day covers two genuinely different real sides of Dutch life — one agricultural and seasonal, the other industrial and centuries-old — with a proper sit-down meal built into the middle of the day rather than a quick bite on the move.
