"Keukenhof" literally means "kitchen garden," and the name is older than the famous flower show itself. As far back as the 15th century, this land supplied herbs, fruit, and vegetables for the kitchen of nearby Teylingen Castle — locally, the sandy grounds were even known as "Keukenduyn," or "kitchen dunes." The manor house still standing on the grounds today, Kasteel Keukenhof, was built in 1641 for a wealthy Amsterdam merchant, and in 1857 the landscape architects David Zocher and his son — the same pair behind Amsterdam's own Vondelpark — redesigned the grounds into the English-style landscape garden visitors still walk through.
The flower show itself is a 20th-century addition. A consortium of Dutch bulb growers and flower exporters founded Keukenhof in 1949 as a real, working showcase for their industry, and the garden opened to the public the following year, drawing more than 300,000 visitors in that very first season. The scale has only grown since: roughly 7 million bulbs, donated by more than 100 growers, go into the ground across the garden's 32 hectares every single autumn.
With well over a million visitors passing through each spring, the entry line is a real, physical queue on a busy day — which is the whole point of a skip-the-line arrangement here. The tulip farm stop adds a different, working-scale view of the same industry: a genuine commercial field rather than the curated display garden.
