Cologne Cathedral took longer to finish than almost any other building in Europe. Construction began on 14 August 1248, and — after a roughly 280-year gap in the middle, from 1560 to 1840, when the money simply ran out — it was finally completed on the exact same date in 1880, 632 years later, and consecrated in front of Emperor Wilhelm I. For a brief period right after completion, at 157 metres tall, it was the tallest building in the world, and it remains the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1996.

The chocolate museum is a much newer, much happier story about one man's accidental discovery. In 1972, chocolate manufacturer Hans Imhoff took over Cologne's historic Stollwerck factory and found crates of old broken machines, packaging, and company files that had simply been left behind as scrap. Recognizing what he'd actually found, he had the materials restored and eventually built the collection into the Schokoladenmuseum, which opened on 31 October 1993 on the Rheinauhafen peninsula. It's now one of Cologne's most-visited cultural institutions, drawing more than 650,000 visitors a year.

Seeing both on one real full-day round trip from Amsterdam pairs over 600 years of Gothic construction history against a museum built from literal factory leftovers — two very different kinds of German history inside the same city.
