Utrecht's skyline is defined by a single landmark: the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands at 112.32 metres. Built between 1321 and 1382 to a design by John of Hainaut, it was originally meant to anchor a full cathedral, but the connected nave collapsed in a storm in 1674 and was never rebuilt, leaving the Gothic tower standing alone ever since on the exact spot where the city of Utrecht itself first began, nearly 2,000 years ago.
Muiderslot has its own, considerably darker medieval story. Count Floris V built the original stone castle in 1280 at the mouth of the Vecht river specifically to collect tolls from traders heading to Utrecht, one of the era's most important trading towns. In 1296, a group of conspirators kidnapped Floris and imprisoned him in his own castle; when he tried to escape, one of them stabbed him twenty times. The castle itself was demolished around 1300 in the fallout, then rebuilt on the same footprint roughly a century later, between 1370 and 1386 — the castle you visit today.
Dutch cheese-making is a genuinely old, still-living rural tradition in this part of Holland, carried on at small working farms that have kept the same hands-on methods going for generations — a fitting, low-key stop between a seven-century-old tower and a castle with its own medieval murder attached.
