Amsterdam has roughly 165 separate canals stretching over 75 kilometers of waterway, crossed by more than a thousand bridges — part of why the city is often nicknamed the Venice of the North, even though its canal network is, by several counts, denser than Venice's own. A short cruise can realistically only cover the three main canals of the historic Grachtengordel; the extra time on this longer version gives your skipper room to also work in some of the quieter side canals and the harbor stretch near Amsterdam Centraal that a 90-minute loop typically has to skip.
That extra distance matters more than it sounds on paper. The main canal ring is the postcard view, but a lot of Amsterdam's real texture — houseboats moored three deep along a narrow gracht, a hidden courtyard glimpsed through an alley, a bridge lifting for a passing barge — sits just off the standard route.
As with the shorter version, this is a private charter with a live local skipper, so the extra ground covered is genuinely shaped around your own group rather than a fixed route every boat runs identically.
