Almost nothing on Brussels' Grand Place is actually as old as it looks. On 13 August 1695, a 70,000-strong French army under Marshal François de Neufville bombarded the undefended city center with cannons and mortars during the Nine Years' War, setting the square on fire and flattening nearly everything around it — only the Town Hall's own façade and tower, which the French had used as their aiming point, survived with their stonework intact. What stands today was rebuilt within the following four years by the city's own guilds, working under rules set by the city councillors, which is why the square reads as a single harmonious ensemble despite mixing Gothic, Baroque, and Louis XIV styles side by side. UNESCO listed the Grand Place as a World Heritage Site in 1998.
Brussels today carries a second, very different kind of significance as the European Union's de facto political capital, a role that dates back to 1958, when the city became the seat of the European Economic Community. The European Commission's headquarters sit in the Berlaymont building, the Council of the European Union meets in the Justus Lipsius building directly across from it, and the European Parliament holds a working chamber in the city as well, even though its main plenary sessions take place in Strasbourg.
A real full-day round trip from Amsterdam gives enough time to see both sides of the city — the rebuilt 17th-century square and the modern institutional district a short distance away — without trying to cram either one into a rushed stop.
