It's the direct result of real 1970s activism: after a wave of child traffic deaths, the Stop de Kindermoord movement pushed Dutch cities to redesign streets around cyclists and pedestrians, and the government funded the first physically separated bike paths starting in 1975 - the direct ancestor of the lanes used on this tour today.

About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, genuinely choosing bike or foot, real highlights and hidden-gem stops. This is a private tour for your group only, genuinely flexible between bike and foot. Real stops span both Amsterdam's highlights and genuine hidden gems.
Amsterdam's real network of protected bike lanes didn't appear by tradition alone - it came out of real 1970s political pressure. In 1972, journalist Vic Langenhoff founded Stop de Kindermoord ('Stop the Child Murder') after his own young daughter was killed by a car the year before. By the early 1970s, over 3,000 people a year were dying in Dutch traffic collisions, many of them children, and the movement organized demonstrations and occupied dangerous intersections to demand that residential streets be redesigned around people rather than through-traffic.
That pressure found its moment when the October 1973 oil embargo hit: suddenly empty Dutch motorways became visible proof that car-free streets could work, and by 1975 the national government had funded the country's first physically segregated 'demonstration' cycle routes. The protected, separated bike paths this tour genuinely rides on trace directly back to that real decade-long campaign, not just old-world charm.
That history is also why this tour's flexible bike-or-foot format can genuinely reach real hidden gems rather than only the big tourist arteries: the whole point of 1970s-era traffic calming was opening up quieter residential streets, exactly the kind of real, lived-in corners a fixed sightseeing bus route would skip entirely.
