Part of the fun of cruising Amsterdam's canals is learning to read the buildings themselves — the shaped gable at the top of each canal house is one of the easiest ways to date it from the water. Step gables, with their distinctive staircase-like profile, were standard until around 1665; neck gables, recognizable by two sharp right-angle notches forming a "neck" shape, were common from roughly 1640 to 1840; and bell gables, built on the same basic idea but softened into rounded, bell-like curves, were fashionable from about 1660 to 1790. Spend two hours on the water and you'll likely pass real examples of all three.
With a real chef working the grill on board, there's a genuine reason to slow down between those landmarks rather than treat the route as a checklist — the BBQ itself becomes the anchor of the afternoon, with the gable-spotting and canal views as the backdrop rather than the other way around.
