Before the Frank family ever went into hiding, they lived openly in Amsterdam for eight years. In December 1933, having fled Frankfurt after the Nazi party's rise to power, they moved into a second-floor apartment at Merwedeplein 37, in the Rivierenbuurt — the "River Quarter" — a neighborhood built mostly between 1920 and 1933 that became a real hub for Jewish refugees arriving from Germany in the 1930s. Anne attended the local Montessori school a short walk from home, in a life that, for a while, looked ordinary.
Covering that ground by bike, led by a guide rather than a map, means the route can take in a stretch of real history that a walking tour or a fixed itinerary might skip — the Amstel River and the River Quarter itself are a genuine extension of the Anne Frank story that predates the Annex entirely, not just a scenic detour.
The Holocaust memorials passed along the way honor a loss that reshaped this part of the city permanently: by the time the war ended, the great majority of the Rivierenbuurt's Jewish residents, along with most of Amsterdam's prewar Jewish community overall, had been murdered. A real, local guide leading the route — rather than a self-navigated app — means there's someone on hand to answer questions and provide context at each stop, not just directions.
