With roughly 2,500 lakes and the interconnecting rivers and portages that link them, Algonquin Provincial Park (established 1893) is one of the great canoe-tripping regions of North America. Covering up to ten miles by water in a day takes real stamina and steady paddling.
Granite shoreline ledges and clear, cool lakes make swimming and, for those who want it, jumping from low rocks part of the day. As with any cliff jumping, water depth and rock condition matter, so follow your guide's judgement on which spots are safe.
Moose, painted turtles and butterflies are all part of the park's summer fauna, and a paddling pace rather than a motor lets you notice them.
