Akumal takes its name directly from the turtles it's known for — in Yucatec Maya, "ak" means turtle and "lumal" means place, so Akumal translates simply to "place of the turtles." The bay earns that name honestly: its shallow, sandy bottom is carpeted with dense meadows of turtle grass (Thalassia testudinum), fed by nutrients from underground freshwater springs, making it one of the Caribbean's most dependable year-round feeding grounds for wild sea turtles.
Three real sea turtle species are documented in and around Akumal: green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), both of which also nest on nearby beaches, and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), often spotted feeding around the reef. All are genuinely wild animals in their natural habitat, not a managed enclosure, which is why guides here typically brief guests on keeping a respectful distance rather than touching or chasing the animals.
The cenote stop that follows is a real change of scene and ecosystem: a freshwater sinkhole formed in the Yucatán's limestone bedrock, part of the same vast underground river system that feeds Akumal's own turtle grass meadows, offering a cool, clear counterpoint to the saltwater snorkeling earlier in the day.
