The La Quebrada cliff divers formed in 1934 when local youths began challenging each other to leap into a narrow, wave-fed gully. Dives are commonly reported at 30 to 41 metres (roughly 100-135 feet), and water depth shifts with the swell, so timing matters.
The cliffs became famous partly through Hollywood, notably 1948's Tarzan and the Mermaids with Johnny Weissmuller, though stunt doubles made the dives. Hotelier Teddy Stauffer helped turn the divers into stars.
Acapulco's sea turtle camps, some operating since the 1980s, protect eggs and release hatchlings with visitor help. Hurricane Otis in 2023 damaged some turtle facilities, so releases depend on season and current conditions.
