Acapulco was the Pacific end of the Manila galleon trade, which ran from 1565 to 1815 carrying silk, spices and porcelain between Asia and New Spain. Fort San Diego, a pentagonal fortress, was built in 1616 to protect the port from pirates.
The cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, a Byzantine- and Moorish-influenced building, dates from the 1930s and anchors the old centre on the zócalo.
The Golden Zone reflects the opposite chapter: the mid-20th-century resort boom, when Teddy Stauffer and Hollywood visitors made the bay a glamorous destination.
