March-May and September-November are Morocco's best months — warm without the summer's extreme heat, when Marrakech and the Sahara regularly exceed 40°C in July-August.
Morocco's imperial cities (Marrakech, Fes, Meknes) and the Sahara are genuinely spread out — a private driver is the standard way to link cities, the Atlas Mountains, and a desert camp on one trip.
Desert nights in the Sahara can drop close to freezing even when the daytime is hot, so warm layers matter for an overnight camp regardless of season.
Morocco uses the dirham (MAD), a closed currency that's hard to obtain outside the country. Tipping — around 10% at restaurants, small amounts for guides and drivers — is customary and expected.
Marrakech's medina is a genuine maze without a reliable street grid — a local guide for the first walk through Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks saves a lot of backtracking.
Not every 'desert' experience is a real overnight camp — some itineraries only reach the closer Agafay stone desert or do a day trip. It's worth checking whether a route actually includes a night in the dunes at Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga.
