October through March is the classic window for the north — cooler, drier weather makes Delhi, Agra, and Rajasthan comfortable for sightseeing. April through June turns brutally hot before the monsoon arrives from June to September, and the Himalayan routes (Ladakh, Spiti, Kashmir) are only open outside the winter months, when snow closes the high passes.
Distances between India's highlights are large — Delhi to Agra is about 3-4 hours by road, Jaipur another 5-6 hours beyond that — so multi-day tours run on a private driver and vehicle for the whole trip rather than city-to-city flights, with hotels arranged at every stop.
North Indian winters (December-January) can dip close to freezing at night in Delhi and Rajasthan, while summer days regularly exceed 40°C (104°F) before the monsoon. Layers work best; the Himalayan routes need proper cold-weather gear even outside winter, since nights at altitude stay cold year-round.
India uses the rupee (INR). Hotels and restaurants in tourist areas generally accept cards, but cash is still useful for markets, tuk-tuks, and small tips. Tipping a private driver or guide roughly 200-500 INR per day is customary.
Most nationalities need an e-Visa, applied for online in advance — it's a straightforward process, but it's worth applying at least a few days before departure rather than at the airport.
