The coast (Kotor, Budva, Herceg Novi) is compact and easy to combine in a day, but Durmitor and the mountainous interior are a genuinely different driving pace on winding roads — a private driver is the practical way to link both.
The coast has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers; Durmitor and the interior are alpine and considerably cooler, with snow into late spring at higher elevations — pack layers if combining both.
Montenegro uses the euro despite not being an EU member. Tipping around 10% at restaurants is customary.
Kotor's cruise-ship days, mostly midday, bring heavy crowds to the old town — an early morning or evening visit gives a much quieter look at the same streets.
Montenegro borders Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania, and several popular routes — like a Dubrovnik-Kotor day trip — cross an international border, so it's worth checking passport or ID requirements in advance.
